Ryans’s story Ryan is 14 years old. He has sickle cell anaemia and avascular necrosis on his hip. In terms of mobility this means he cannot participate in any contact sport or any physical activity that puts pressure on his hips. On a bad day Ryan has to use his chair all the time and is sometimes confined to his bed. On a good day Ryan is pain free and doesn't have to use his chair at all. Like any other 14-year-old boy, Ryan is a happy, outgoing child who likes to play outside as well as playing games on his home computer and Playstation. Pain in his arms and his shoulders is the only thing that will prevent him from going out with his friends in his wheelchair. Ryan's role model is his uncle Sinclair, also a wheelchair user, who plays wheelchair basketball for the Men's Olympic Wheelchair Basketball Team for Great Britain. He is a great inspiration for him and helps to keep him motivated during the difficult times. As a child Ryan has always been interested in anything to do with science and hopes one day to be a Quantum Scientist. His mum is right behind him all the way and is certain that he will achieve all he hopes for, as he is a very determined young man.
